Amer Ali Khan and Prof. Kodandaram Sworn In as Telangana MLCs

In a significant development, Amer Ali Khan, the News Editor of The Siasat Daily, and Prof. M. Kodandaram Reddy, President of the Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS), were sworn in as Members of the Telangana State Legislative Council (MLCs) . The oath-taking ceremony marked the culmination of a protracted legal battle over their nominations.

Both Khan and Prof. Kodandaram had been nominated as MLCs under the Governor’s quota back in January. However, their swearing-in was delayed after the Telangana High Court intervened, acting on a petition filed by Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders Dasoju Shravan and Kurra Satyanarayana. The BRS leaders challenged the appointments, arguing that they were not in accordance with the rules governing the Governor’s quota nominations.

In March, the Telangana High Court delivered a judgment that quashed the Governor’s earlier order rejecting the nominations of Dasoju Shravan Kumar and K. Satyanarayana. Simultaneously, the court also invalidated the nominations of Amer Ali Khan and Prof. Kodandaram, effectively putting their appointments on hold.

The case took a decisive turn on Wednesday when the Supreme Court stayed the Telangana High Court’s judgment, thereby allowing the state and the Governor to proceed with the appointments. The Supreme Court’s stay order came in response to appeals filed by the BRS nominees, who argued that any appointment of Congress-affiliated nominees under the Governor’s quota should be subject to the outcome of the ongoing legal proceedings.

Following the Supreme Court’s stay, Amer Ali Khan and Prof. Kodandaram were officially administered the oath as MLCs, solidifying their positions within the Telangana Legislative Council.

This development is particularly significant in the context of Telangana’s political landscape. Prof. Kodandaram is a well-known figure, having played a pivotal role in the Telangana statehood movement, while Amer Ali Khan is a respected journalist and social activist. Their appointments are seen as a reflection of the growing influence of civil society figures in the state’s legislative processes.

As the two newly appointed MLCs assume their roles, they are expected to contribute to the legislative discourse in Telangana, bringing their diverse experiences and perspectives to the table. The legal challenges surrounding their nominations, however, serve as a reminder of the complexities and contentious nature of political appointments in the state.

The Supreme Court’s final ruling on the matter will ultimately determine the permanence of their positions, but for now, Amer Ali Khan and Prof. Kodandaram have taken their places in the Telangana Legislative Council, ready to serve the state and its people.
