The annual meeting of the Urdu Alumni Association of the Department of Urdu, University of Madras, was held on October 2, 2024, in line with its long-standing tradition. The event began with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Hafiza Faiza Tahseen, the esteemed daughter of Dr. Amanullah, the Chairperson of the Department of Urdu, University of Madras.
This was followed by a praise of the Almighty presented by Sajid Hussain Nadvi. Molana Abrar Ahmed recited a Na’at (a poem in praise of the Prophet), and the university anthem, “Jamia Madras,” was recited by Molana Asjad Ahmed.
The session was ably moderated by Dr. Parveen Fatima, the Secretary of the Alumni Association. Dr. Kaleemullah, the Treasurer of the association, delivered the welcome address.

As per tradition, the esteemed guests were honored with shawls during the event. The “Khidmat-e-Urdu” Award for 2024 was presented to Dr. Zaheer Afaaq in recognition of his dedicated services to the promotion of Urdu. Research scholar Ayesha Siddiqa highlighted Dr. Zaheer Afaaq’s literary contributions to the Urdu language.
The special guest, Mr. A. Mohammed Ashraf, Chairman of the “Miyasi Urdu Academy” in Chennai, attended the event, while the honorary guest and patron of the association, Professor Qazi Habib Ahmed, offered valuable suggestions for the promotion and preservation of Urdu.
In his presidential address, Dr. Amanullah announced the newly elected office-bearers of the Alumni Association. The list included:
Vice Presidents: Dr. Hayat Iftikhar and Dr. Parveen Fatima
Secretary: Dr. Ghausia Saeeda
Joint Secretaries: Dr. Ghayas Ahmed and Dr. Tamim Ahmed
Treasurer: Dr. Kaleemullah, along with other members.
Dr. Hayat Iftikhar shared his reflections on the successful conduct of the meeting. Distinguished participants included Dr. Zakir Hussain, Head of the Department of Arabic, Persian, and Urdu, University of Madras; Dr. Mubeen; Dr. Gulzar Ahmed; Dr. Azam; Dr. S. Mohammed Yaseer; Dr. Nikhat Naz; Ziauddin; Tamim Sharif; Ayesha Siddiqa; Daulat Hussain, and many other esteemed guests.
Before the conclusion of the session, a stage performance of the Urdu drama titled “Hamari Zaban Urdu” (Our Language Urdu) was presented.
The third session of the event featured an Urdu poetry recital (Mushaira) presided over by Dr. Amanullah, with Shahid Madrasi moderating the program. Special guest poets included:

The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Ghausia Saeeda, marking the successful end of the gathering. The event showcased the commitment of the Alumni Association and the Department of Urdu towards preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Urdu language and literature.
