The movement of a tiger near Kanakapur and Parimandal villages in Laxmanachanda mandal has triggered panic among local residents. The District Forest Officer (DFO), Nagini Banu, confirmed that pugmarks were discovered in a cotton field on the outskirts of Parimandal village. The Forest Department is actively monitoring the animal’s movements through CCTV cameras and trackers, though the tiger’s gender and age remain undetermined.
Forest officials suspect the tiger might be S-12, a male previously sighted in the forests of Tiryani. S-12 is believed to have ventured into Nirmal district, potentially displacing another male tiger, Johnny, which had been roaming the area.
Johnny, originating from the Painganga Wildlife Sanctuary in Maharashtra, recently made an unsuccessful 350-kilometer journey through the forests of Adilabad and Nirmal in search of a mate. Unable to find one, Johnny returned to his territory in Maharashtra. Meanwhile, S-12 has been exploring new territories, previously roaming the forests of Luxettipet, Kasipet, and Kumram Bheem Asifabad district after leaving the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve.
Residents of Kanakapur and Parimandal have reported tiger sightings near agricultural fields and expressed fears for their safety. The Forest Department has urged locals to remain vigilant, avoid direct confrontation with the tiger, and refrain from using electrified fences, which could harm the animal.
Authorities have assured villagers that they are closely tracking the tiger to minimize risks. Farmers have been advised to adopt non-lethal methods to protect their crops. The Forest Department has promised prompt compensation for any livestock losses caused by the tiger.
The presence of S-12 in Nirmal district highlights the ongoing challenges of wildlife movement and territorial shifts in the region. Residents have been urged to cooperate with forest officials to ensure both human and animal safety as efforts continue to monitor and manage the tiger’s movements.
