A remarkable act of compassion and courage by an Indian Army doctor at Jhansi Railway Station has drawn widespread praise across the country. On Saturday, Major Rohit Bachwala of the Military Hospital, Jhansi, turned an ordinary footover bridge into an emergency maternity ward and successfully delivered a baby girl using just a pocket knife, hair clips, gloves, and a dhoti.
The incident unfolded at the Virangana Laxmibai Jhansi Railway Station when a woman travelling with her husband and child on the Panvel-Gorakhpur Express (15066) went into sudden labour. Her husband quickly raised an SOS alert using the Rail Madad app. Major Bachwala, who was waiting to board a train to Hyderabad, responded immediately without hesitation.
With the assistance of women railway staff who cordoned off the area, the Army doctor used makeshift tools and ensured the safe delivery of the baby girl. The North Central Railway’s Jhansi division later confirmed that their control room and medical team were also activated in response to the emergency.
Indian Army officials acknowledged the bravery and quick action of Major Bachwala, stating that his efforts ensured the mother and newborn remained stable. The mother and child were later shifted by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further care, where both were reported to be healthy.
Female railway staff—Lily Kushwaha, Rakhi Kushwaha, Jyotika Sahu, and Kavita Agarwal—played an important supporting role, helping with privacy, safety, and coordination during the emergency.
The story quickly went viral on social media, with users lauding the Indian Army and the humane gesture of Major Bachwala. Comments flooded in praising the Army doctor’s selfless act, with many expressing pride and gratitude. Some users remarked how such stories restore faith in humanity and how the baby girl would one day cherish the story of her birth.
In the middle of a chaotic rush hour, Jhansi Railway Station became the site of a touching moment of resilience and humanity, showcasing the unwavering dedication of the Indian Army beyond the battlefield.
