Asaduddin Owaisi defeats BJP’s candidate Madhavi Latha by over 3 lakh votes

BJP’s Hyderabad candidate, Kompella Madhavi Latha, faced defeat by 3,38,087 votes against her main rival, All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen’s (AIMIM) Asaduddin Owaisi, who secured his fifth consecutive victory.

The Hyderabad seat has been a stronghold for the Owaisi family for four decades, with Asaduddin Owaisi serving as MP for 20 years and his father, late Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi, holding it for six terms. In the 2019 elections, Owaisi retained the seat, defeating BJP’s Bhagvanth Rao by a significant margin of over 2.8 lakh votes.

The Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency comprises seven assembly segments and has a substantial Muslim voter base. The BJP, attempting to capture the seat, fielded a woman candidate, Kompella Madhavi Latha, for the first time in the “old-city” segment against Owaisi. Latha, a political newcomer and a proponent of Hindutva, campaigned vigorously in Hyderabad’s old quarters, highlighting issues concerning women and Pasmanda groups.

However, her campaign was not without controversies. A viral video surfaced showing her gesturing as if shooting an arrow at a mosque during a Ram Navami rally, which she claimed was doctored. Another incident involved Latha asking burqa-clad women to remove their veils at a polling booth, resulting in a case being registered against her.

Despite her efforts, Latha loses to Owaisi by a larger margin compared to the BJP’s previous candidate. Hyderabad witnessed a voter turnout of 46% on election day. Owaisi, reacting to Latha’s campaign, criticized her gestures as objectionable and called for peace and prosperity for Hyderabad.
