Begumpet Airport May Reopen for Commercial Flights, New Developments in Telangana Aviation Sector

In a significant development for Telangana’s aviation sector, Union Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu has hinted that Begumpet Airport, which ceased commercial operations in 2008, could be reopened for commercial flights. This announcement has generated considerable interest, especially among aviation enthusiasts and residents of Hyderabad, who have long awaited a return to the convenience offered by the city’s historic airport.

In addition to the possible reopening of Begumpet Airport, the minister revealed plans to launch an amphibious seaplane service between Hyderabad and Srisailam, providing a unique mode of transport that could greatly reduce travel time and enhance connectivity between these two important destinations. The service aims to promote tourism and strengthen regional connectivity in the state.

Further boosting Telangana’s aviation infrastructure, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has confirmed that plans for the development of Mamnoor Airport, located in the region, are ready. The new terminal and runway development will position Mamnoor Airport as the second operational airport in Telangana once completed.

Currently non-operational, Mamnoor Airport was in service until 1981 but has long remained inactive. The airport, which holds historical significance as the largest pre-independence aviation facility in the region, was built in 1930 and commissioned by the last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan.

Additionally, the minister announced that the Centre is in the process of receiving technical and weather reports, which will pave the way for setting up an airport at Kothagudem. This further underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the aviation landscape in Telangana and facilitating better air travel connectivity across the state.

Begumpet Airport has played a crucial role in Hyderabad’s aviation history. Built in the 1930s, the airport served as a major commercial hub for several decades. However, following the inauguration of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad on March 23, 2008, Begumpet Airport ceased all commercial operations. Today, it continues to serve general and military aviation, housing the Begumpet Air Force Station of the Indian Air Force.

As the Centre moves forward with its plans to enhance air travel options in Telangana, the revival of Begumpet Airport for commercial use, the introduction of seaplane services, and the operationalization of Mamnoor and Kothagudem airports promise to transform the region’s aviation sector. These efforts will not only boost tourism but also help meet the growing demand for air travel in one of India’s rapidly developing states.
