Begumpet Airport Relocation Demand Grows After Ahmedabad Crash

The demand for relocating Begumpet Airport has gained fresh momentum following the recent Ahmedabad Air India accident and the ongoing public consultation on the Civil Aviation Rules-2025.

The Cantonment Vikas Manch (CVM), representing residents of Secunderabad Cantonment, has submitted objections to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, urging the government to shift airport operations to the Dundigal Air Force Academy.

Residents argue that keeping an operational airport in the heart of the city, surrounded by densely populated residential areas, poses serious safety risks. The Ahmedabad incident, where an aircraft overshot the runway in a crowded locality, has heightened fears of a similar disaster occurring in Hyderabad.

The CVM pointed out that Begumpet Airport, now used mainly for pilot training and VIP landings, continues to cause noise pollution, night-time disturbances, and imposes restrictive building byelaws on surrounding areas. These constraints have slowed down urban development and limited infrastructure growth across large parts of Hyderabad.

Residents also raised health concerns due to constant noise and air pollution. The organization stressed that the airport’s presence violates modern urban safety norms, especially after the opening of the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad in 2008, which was meant to take over all commercial flight operations.

The CVM suggested Dundigal Air Force Academy as a safer and more logical alternative. Relocating flight operations there would free up valuable urban land for housing, green spaces, and other public amenities, while also eliminating safety and pollution risks for local communities.

The civic body also linked this demand to their long-standing appeal for the merger of Secunderabad Cantonment civilian areas with GHMC, to bring better governance and infrastructure development.

With the government currently reviewing public feedback on the Civil Aviation Rules-2025, many residents hope the Centre will take this opportunity to prioritize public safety, environmental well-being, and Hyderabad’s future urban growth.
