Bengaluru Photographer Arrested for Stealing ₹9 Lakh Worth of Camera Equipment in Hyderabad

A photographer from Bengaluru was arrested by the Mirchowk Police for allegedly stealing high-end camera equipment worth ₹9 lakh from a rental company in Hyderabad.

The accused, identified as 41-year-old B. Chalapati, was apprehended after he posed as a customer named Manoj to rent a high-end DSLR camera with a lens for a photoshoot. According to Sneha Mehra, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for Hyderabad South Zone, Chalapati rented the equipment for ₹9,000 on July 25.

Chalapati, along with Rakesh from the rental agency, visited multiple locations in Hyderabad, including Tank Bund, Jala Vihar, Sanjeevaiah Park, Birla Science Museum, and Salarjung Museum. While Rakesh was occupied inside the museum, Chalapati allegedly seized the opportunity to steal the camera bag containing lenses, memory cards, batteries, and chargers.

Following the theft, the rental agency lodged a complaint, leading to Chalapati’s trace to Bengaluru. He was eventually apprehended at the MGBS (Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station) in Hyderabad when he attempted to sell the stolen equipment at Jagdish Market.

The stolen camera equipment was recovered and returned to the rental company. The investigation revealed that Chalapati has a criminal history in Karnataka, including cases of theft, robbery, and cheating. He reportedly resorted to theft due to financial struggles and a recent accident that had incapacitated him from working as a photographer.

The case highlights the need for vigilance in rental transactions and the swift action taken by the Hyderabad police in addressing the crime.
