Ditching BJP months after Mamata Banerjee clenched onto victory in the West Bengal elections, the saffron party’s MLA Biswajit Das switched back to Trinamool Congress. He became the third person to return to the party following its win.
Like many others, Biswajit had turned his back to Trinamool and joined BJP weeks before the polls. Big names had shifted to the Centre’s ruling party after Amit Shah reached West Bengal to campaign for his party.
However, tides seemed to alter their course again as he returned to Trinamool along with 3 others.
Bishnupur’s BJP MLA Tanmay Ghosh too shifted to Mamata Banerjee’s party yesterday after moving to BJP from Trinamool during the election days. He had won on BJP’s ticket this year. However, the MLA said his victory was solely based on his hard work and had nothing to do with the party. He explained that he made the decision to leave BJP as the party was trying to create a ruckus in Bengal and is practising vindictive politics in the state.

“During assembly elections, they even tried to win over Bengal by force. BJP is also using government machinery to meddle into matters of the state and to ruin the history and culture of Bengal,” Ghosh said.
When asked about whether or not he met the senior leaders of BJP, he said, “Over the past 3 months, I have worked in my constituency on my own and tried to help people.”
He said that the party “does not have any organizational network at the booth level” as “there is only talk and no work”. He also urged everyone else to join Trinamool “for the welfare of West Bengal” and they need to “strengthen the hands of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee”. Reacting to the sharp comments of Ghosh, a few BJP leaders showcased their anguish.
Former Tripura and Meghalaya governor Tathagata Roy responded to the questions asked about whether or not the people who gave the ticket to Ghosh will accept their mistake. “Those who are passing off a loss as a victory, who are even scared to analyse what went wrong, how will they have the courage to admit wrongs,” he tweeted.
Welcoming Ghosh back into Trinamool, state education minister Bratya Basu made a sarcastic comment over the saffron party. “Even BJP legislators are shunning the politics of violence practised by the central government and protesting against their efforts to demean the state. We will continue this fight,” he said.
In line with Ghosh’s call to the BJP leaders, he asked everyone to come to TMC though the final decision will be taken by the party leaders.
The third person to return to Trinamool was Mukul Roy who was the first to leave the party to join BJP 4 years back. He was BJP’s MLA from the Krishnanagar North constituency in Bengal.
BJP is now left with 72 seats in the assembly, out of the 77 seats it had won, after these exits.
