Leaders of Telangana’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) went on a 24-hour hunger strike to protest what they regard as the KCR government’s neglect of unemployment and youth issues. G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister for Tourism and Culture and State BJP President, began the hunger strike at Dharna Chowk in Indira Park, Hyderabad.
The demonstration, led by Tarun Chugh, BJP National General Secretary in charge of Telangana, and other state-level BJP leaders, aims to highlight the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government’s apparent indifference to the issues of unemployed youths.
Reddy, who also protested, accused the BRS administration of failing to provide work chances to the unemployed during its nine-year rule. He argued that the government broke its pledge to provide unemployment benefits.
The BJP leader chastised KCR’s government for its treatment of students and the unemployed, both of whom played key roles in the Telangana agitation. Reddy questioned KCR’s commitment to offer work for every household, accusing the administration of abandoning the youth’s hopes of job opportunities within the state.
Reddy promised that if the BJP was elected, he would emphasize job creation for the unemployed. He also chastised the KCR government over the recent leak of question papers for Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) recruitment tests, stating that the government’s ineptitude had left 30 lakh people unemployed.
Reddy questioned KCR’s moral right to run for office in the 2018 elections, citing charges of corruption within the ruling party and its officials’ participation in commission-seeking procedures relating to various projects.
The BJP leader further accused KCR of supplying funds to bolster the Congress party and vowed to fight the BRS government’s alleged corrupt and dynastic rule till it was defeated.
Tarun Chugh, the BJP’s National General Secretary, stated that people from all walks of life were dissatisfied with KCR’s administration and projected that the BRS will lose power in the November elections.
Chugh also challenged the BRS government to a debate on Minister K. T. Rama Rao’s claim of achieving a 100 percent target in the distribution of double-bedroom dwellings.
He further questioned KCR’s announcement to deliver Rs 10 lakh to every Dalit household, stating that the Dalit Bandhu scheme was only implemented in assembly constituencies where by-elections were held.
The hunger strike reflects rising political tensions in Telangana as political parties prepare for the approaching elections, with the BJP portraying itself as a viable alternative to the incumbent TRS administration.
