New Delhi: AIMIM party president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi questioned the government logic behind the curbing of the practice of Triple Talaq, while the Supreme Court is decriminalizing adultery and same sex relationships, as “you want to send Muslims to jail”and termed it as an attack on the rights conferred upon Muslims by the constitution of India.
He asked the government not to misguide the house by referring the name of supreme court and questioned to show on which part in the supreme court majority judgement has reffered Triple Talaq as unconstitutional.
“The entire Muslim population in the country is against the move to criminalize Triple Talaq. Why are you criminalizing Triple Talaq while supporting the decriminalization of homosexuality, If sexual minorities can get a choice in Section 377, why can’t religious minorities” he questioned during the debate on the Triple Talaq bill in the Lok Sabha
“If your faith is your faith, then my faith should not be my faith” He said. You can bring your own law, but we will not part with our religion” he added.
While the government had held in court that retaining adultery as an offence was necessary to preserve the sanctity of marriage, it left the decision on decriminalizing homosexuality to the wisdom of judiciary.
At the same time, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government was not bothered about social problems faced by Hindu women. He added
Referring to the BJP stand on the Sabarimala verdict, he said while the ruling party opposed it saying it is a matter of faith, the same principle is not applicable to a matter of faith for Muslims. .
