Botched surgeries strictly dealt with by Telangana govt

The Telangana government reacted sternly on Friday to the botched family planning operations at a community health center (CHC) on August 25.

Following the deaths of the four women, Swarajya Lakshmi, the district medical health officer (DMHO), and Jhansi Lakshmi, the district coordinator of hospital services (DCHS), were transferred to the Rangareddy district. Dr. Joel Sunil Kumar, who performed the surgeries, is facing a criminal case.

Jhansi Lakshmi has been told to report to Shadnagar hospital after her transfer, where disciplinary action will be taken against her. Dr. Sridhar, the superintendent of the Ibrahimpatnam hospital, is also facing disciplinary action

In addition, the government has mandated regular training for all 13 medical personnel, including Ibrahimpatnam Hospital Double Puncture Laparoscopy (DPL) camp officer Dr. Nagajyoti, deputy civil surgeon Dr. Geetha, head nurse Chandrakala along with Madgul primary health center (PHC) Dr. Srinivas, supervisors Alivelu, Mangamma, Manchal PHC Dr. Kiran, supervisor Jayalatha, Dandamilaram PHC Dr. Poonam, supervisor Janakamma.

At Ibrahimpatnam’s Civil Hospital, a mobile team of health officials, including two surgeons, conducted DPL on 34 women.

Later, four of them complained of acute gastroenteritis and sought treatment at private hospitals. In all four cases, the women died during treatment.

Later, the remaining women were transferred to Apollo Hospital and Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad for treatment. After treatment, they were all discharged.

Dr. G. Srinivasa Rao, the director of public health, was later appointed to conduct an investigation.

The inquiry committee has made recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future. It was suggested that a hospital should not perform more than 30 Family Planning procedures per day.

Dr. Varadachari, superintendent of Kondapur Area Hospital, has been appointed as Rangareddy’s DCHS. To avoid similar incidents in the future, the Telangana government has issued guidelines for the management of family planning operations.

All teaching hospitals, Vaidya Vidhana parishad hospitals, and primary health care centers must follow the committee report’s mandates.
