Hyderabad: The ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has allocated a considerable number of tickets to the Reddy community for the upcoming Telangana Assembly elections later this year.
The Reddy community is represented by 39 candidates on the BRS list of 115 candidates released on Monday. With only eight current MLAs rejected tickets by the BRS, the distribution of seats to various social groups has remained reasonably steady since the 2018 elections.
Backward Class (BC) candidates received 23 tickets from the BRS, while Velama candidates received 12 seats from the party’s President and Chief Minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s clan. Six Kamma candidates also won party tickets.
There are 19 Scheduled Castes (SCs), 11 Scheduled Tribes (STs), and three minority candidates among the contenders. The Vysa and Brahmin communities each have one candidate. The BRS will announce candidates for the remaining four seats later.
Political observers remark that the Reddy community, a socially and politically significant group, continues to receive the most number of tickets from the BRS. This action is interpreted as an attempt to maintain ticket distribution balance, particularly in light of the Congress’ efforts to consolidate Reddy votes.
While caste is less important in Telangana elections than in Andhra Pradesh, Reddys have historically wielded power in the state’s political scene.
Despite asking for a 33% reserve for women, the BRS only issued seats to seven women. When asked about it at a news conference, KCR justified the choice, saying it was the best they could do given the circumstances. KCR feels that women’s reservations in legislative bodies are necessary to compel all parties to produce female candidates.
The BRS was chastised by both the Congress and the BJP for awarding only 3% of tickets to women. KCR was dubbed “anti-woman” by state BJP spokeswoman Rani Rudramma, who questioned why KCR’s daughter, K. Kavitha, who demonstrated for women’s reservation in Delhi, did not protest at the BRS office.
