Talasani Srinivas Yadav, Minister for Animal Husbandry, stated that the BRS government is taking steps to ensure that the State capital, Hyderabad, does not face drinking water scarcity for the next 50 years.
Addressing the “Drinking Water Day” celebrated at West Marredpally here on Sunday as part of the Telangana Formation Day celebrations, the Minister stated that the State government was taking permanent measures to prevent drinking water problems in Hyderabad and had spent Rs13,546 crores so far for laying new water pipelines and constructing reservoirs.
By drawing water from the Godavari and Krishna rivers, steps are being taken to avoid drinking water scarcity in Hyderabad for the next 50 years. The construction of the Sunkishala project, on the other hand, has been taken up to draw water from the Nagarjuna Sagar Project continuously, he said.
According to the Minister, there were 8.15 lakh drinking water connections in Hyderabad prior to 2014, and the number of connections has now increased to 13.17 lakhs. Talasani Srinivas Yadav informed that the state government is supplying 20,000 liters of drinking water to each household free of charge on a monthly basis and is bearing Rs.815 crores for the purpose.
Adequate water supply regardless of population growth
Speaking at the Urban Progress Day event on Friday, Municipal Administration Minister KT Rama Rao stated that Hyderabad has an adequate water supply regardless of future population growth.
According to the Minister, even with a projected population double by 2050, Hyderabad is the only city with a sufficient water supply. Extensive preventive measures are being put in place to avoid future drinking water shortages. A tank project is currently underway to achieve this goal.
Dana Kishore, Managing Director of HMWSSB, said that Hyderabad currently has an abundant water supply, with plans in place to meet future demands. Previously, the city relied on the reservoirs of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar for drinking water, but this is no longer necessary.
