Centre Launches AMRUT 2.0 To “Water Secure and Self-Sustain” Cities Across India

In the latest update, the Union Cabinet had led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday had approved the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 (AMRUT 2.0) till 2025-26.

Union Cabinet Intends To Make Cities Water Secure With AMRUT 2.0 

The Centre in their statement said that AMRUT 2.0 is a step towards “AatmaNirbhar” and intends to make the cities across the country “water secure and self-sustainable”. This is to be achieved by providing functional tap connections to the households, rejuvenation of water bodies and wells, recycle/re-use of treated used water, undertaking water source conservation and rainwater harvesting.

AMRUT was launched to facilitate ease of living for the citizens in 500 cities by providing tap connections and sewer connections. Up till now, a total of 1.1 crore households have received tap connections along with 85 lakh sewer connections. Around 6000 MLD sewage treatment capacity is under construction. Out of these, 1210 MLD capacity is already created .

2.68 Crore Tap Connections To Be Installed With AMRUT 2.0 

The AMRUT 2.0 targets the universal coverage of water supply by providing household tap connections in all the 4378 statutory towns. The aim is to provide 2.68 crore tap connections to achieve the target.

The mission will be monitored via a portal to make it digital and paperless. Meanwhile the cities will assess their water sources, consumptions, future requirements and water losses via a city balance plan and city water action plan. All will be prepared a submitted to the State Water Action Plan and will be approved by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

The funds for the project will be shared by the Centre, State and ULBs.
