In the upcoming Telangana assembly elections, the Congress party is relying heavily on Muslim voters, given the expected showdown with the ruling BRS and BJP. However, both major parties seem disinterested in addressing the concerns of the Muslim community.
A significant question looms: Will the Congress party manage to secure any Muslim candidates in the Assembly this time? In the previous elections, only two Congress candidates, Muhammad Ali Shabbir, and Feroze Khan, fought valiantly but narrowly lost to their rivals.
The same scenario may repeat, leaving only one Muslim representative from Majlis in the Assembly. The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has announced only three Muslim candidates, with two from the old city, while the Congress is yet to release its candidate list. Out of over 70 Muslim leaders who applied for Congress tickets in the state, only a few may receive them outside Hyderabad.

In the 2018 assembly elections, the Congress fielded seven Muslim candidates from Telangana, but none succeeded. Muhammad Ali Shabbir and Mohammad Feroze Khan faced close defeats, and the margins were not in their favor. Tahir bin Hamdan secured the second position in Nizamabad Urban but faced a significant vote gap.
Outside Hyderabad, the Congress could only field two candidates in the last elections, and this time Muhammad Ali Shabbir faces additional competition due to KCR’s comradeship announcement. Feroze Khan remains a strong contender, but his success in the Majlis stronghold is uncertain.
Apart from these two leaders, there are few minority leaders within the party who can garner voter support independently. Many Congress minority leaders have limited public interaction, diminishing their trustworthiness.
In the old city assembly constituencies, BRS has consistently ranked second or third, while the Congress has often been fourth. The BJP has secured the second position in certain areas. Given this context, the Congress party’s chances of success in the old city seem bleak.
