Cherlapalli terminal expected to be inaugurated in July

The new rail terminal at Cherlapalli, located on the outskirts of the city, is fast nearing completion and is expected to be inaugurated this month. Designed to feature modern facilities and architectural elements on par with airports, the facility is being constructed at a cost of Rs 430 crore.

According to railway officials, the new terminal will alleviate congestion at the existing railway stations — Secunderabad, Hyderabad, and Kacheguda — which are currently saturated due to high traffic volumes. Many trains are expected to commence operations from Cherlapalli once the station is ready.

To further ease congestion, the Lingampalli station on the west is already being developed as a terminal station. The new Cherlapalli station building, featuring a modern architectural facade, will include six booking counters, separate waiting halls for women and men, an upper-class waiting area, and an executive lounge on the ground floor.

South Central Railway (SCR) officials have stated that the first floor will house a cafeteria, restaurant, feeding cabins for mothers, and restroom facilities for both women and men. The station’s design will feature spacious concourse areas and a modern elevation with illuminated facade lighting. The terminal also falls under the MMTS Phase – II project.

The redeveloped station will have four additional high-level platforms, while the existing five platforms have been extended to accommodate full-length trains. Two new foot over bridges, one 12-metre wide and another 6-metre wide, will facilitate seamless inter-platform movement. Additionally, all nine platforms will be equipped with escalators and lifts. The station will also feature coach maintenance facilities for trains starting from the terminal.

“Cherlapalli railway station will become the fourth major passenger terminal in the twin cities. The new terminal is being developed with modern facilities and technology on par with airports,” said a senior SCR official.

Explaining the importance of the Cherlapalli terminal, the official noted that the upcoming facility would not only reduce the burden at Secunderabad, Nampally, and Kacheguda stations but also meet the growing requirements of the city’s population. The terminal’s proximity to the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and the upcoming Regional Ring Road (RRR) is expected to benefit passengers significantly.
