Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has committed to completing the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) connectivity to the Old City within the next four years. Speaking during a discussion on the State budget in the Assembly on Saturday, Reddy outlined the ambitious plans for expanding the HMR Phase-II network, which will extend over 78 km and aim to benefit a broader segment of the city’s population.
Reddy announced that the State government plans to establish a joint venture with the Centre to fund this extensive expansion project. Under this proposal, the State government will cover 35 percent of the expenditure, while the Centre is being requested to contribute 15 percent. The remaining 45 percent is expected to be secured through loans, with an additional 5 percent to be sourced via a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the expansion plans have already been submitted to the Union government. He noted that the Phase-II expansion designs and routes, which were initially proposed by the previous BRS government, have been revised. The foundation stone for the project has been laid at Chandrayangutta, and tenders are now being invited for a 33 km stretch aimed at providing direct airport connectivity.

Reddy reassured that despite any potential lack of support from the Centre, the State government is determined to complete the expansion before the next Assembly elections. He also highlighted that land acquisition for the project is currently underway.
In addition to discussing the metro expansion, Reddy addressed his reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “Bade Bhai.” He clarified that this term was used solely in the context of maintaining a cordial Centre-State relationship and not for seeking political favors.
The Chief Minister’s statements underscore the State government’s commitment to enhancing urban transport infrastructure while navigating complex intergovernmental financial arrangements.
