Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) on Friday announced various new projects along apart from next phase of expansion of airport infrastructure at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in the city outskirts as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations.
Chief Minister Telangana State Mr. K Chandrasekhar Rao laid down the foundation stone for the expansion of the international airport in the city as well as India’s largest exhibition and convention centre and also launched its greenfield airport city –‘’Hyderabad Airport City’’ on the occasion.
State Minister for Information Technology Mr. K. T. Rama Rao released the stamps and envelops. He said on the occasion that Hyderabad International Airport touched its heights during the last 10 years. He hoped that it will achieve the target of handling 100 million passengers after completion of another terminal. He assured to pass a bill for construction of Airport Express with a outlay of 4650 crores during the current budget session of Assembly. He said that the commercials establishments are attracting towards the Airport which will strenghten the economic position of the State. Today Multinational Companies are come forward to invest in the State .
Speaking about the expansion of Hyderabad airport, GHIAL CEO SGK Kishore said that though the capacity of Hyderabad international airport is 12 million passengers per annum, however, currently we are handling 18 million passengers per annum by increasing process efficiency and usage of state of the art technology. He said to cater to the galloping demand, GHIAL will be investing around Rs 2,000 crore over the next 2-3 years to double its passenger handling capacity to 25-26 million passengers.
It is interesting to note that the expansion activities are being carried out three years ahead of schedule. “Post the formation of Telangana state in 2014, Hyderabad has been witnessing rapid socio-economic growth and in tandem the airport has seen unprecedented growth of passenger traffic flow. Since 2014, the passenger traffic growth rate has tripled from 7% to about 21% year-on-year over the last four years,” GMR Group chairman GM Rao explained.
