In a bold move to reform higher education in Telangana, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy  directed all public universities in the state to become student-centric and market-driven institutions. Chairing a high-level meeting with Vice Chancellors at the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), the CM stressed the need to eliminate outdated courses and introduce programmes aligned with current job market demands.

“Our goal is to build a strong future for students, especially those from rural and economically weaker backgrounds,” Revanth said. “Courses must prepare them to compete with graduates from top private institutions. There’s no point in continuing programmes just because faculty are in place.”

He cautioned against turning universities into “rehabilitation centres” for professors whose subjects have lost relevance, suggesting they be given administrative roles instead. The Chief Minister insisted that curriculums should be focused on shaping careers, not just helping students clear exams.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy also unveiled the official logo of Veeranari Chakali Ilamma Women’s Universitykoti, a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to promote women’s education. Vice Chancellor Professor Surya Dhananjay was present on the occasion and expressed gratitude for the recognition and government support.

Several Vice Chancellors raised concerns about faculty shortages, lack of infrastructure, and basic facilities. The CM assured full government support and funding but demanded a concrete roadmap for recruitment, infrastructure development, and course restructuring.

“I want a consolidated report outlining both collective and university-wise issues,” he told the VCs, directing them to meet with State Advisor K. Keshava Rao to submit a comprehensive plan.

He acknowledged that private universities are increasingly attracting students from affluent families by offering cutting-edge courses. This makes it crucial, he said, for government institutions to raise their standards and provide quality education for the underprivileged.

The meeting was attended by Advisors VeM Narendra Reddy, K. Keshava Rao, and Srinivas Raju; Higher Education Council Chairman Balakishtha Reddy; CM Secretary Manik Raj; School Education Secretary Yogita Rana; Technical Education Commissioner A. Sridevasena; Primary Education Director Narasimhareddy; and Education Commission Chairman Aakunoori Murali along with members P.L. Vishweshwar Rao, Charakonda Venkatesh, and Jyotsna Shivareddy.
