Velpur village in Telangana’s Nizamabad district has recently been enveloped in tension as a long-standing land dispute involving a 150-year-old graveyard and Eidgah takes a communal turn. The conflict, which had been simmering since 2015, suddenly erupted when the village development committee (VDC) called for a social boycott of the Muslim community.
The Velpur village development committee (VDC) made a call for a social boycott against the Muslim community on December 9, resulting in a sequence of events that prompted worries about communal harmony. On December 10, between 200-250 members of the Hindu community assembled at the disputed location with the intention of destroying graves. Section 144 was enforced in response to any potential conflicts.
On December 11, the Nizamabad district collector convened a meeting with members of the Waqf board, a revenue divisional officer, an assistant commissioner of police, and Velpur village elders to mediate and resolve the disagreement. The VDC members, on the other hand, were conspicuously absent from this critical meeting.
In the midst of the turmoil, Muslim community officials issued a statement on December 13 accusing the VDC of aiming to sow communal discord. The statement also urged Telangana’s Director General of Police to protect Muslims in Velpur and foster communal peace.
The disagreement, which is founded in a land use issue, began in 2015, when the VDC claimed that the site was customarily utilized for cow grazing. The Muslim community, on the other side, claims that the location has been used as a burial for nearly 150 years.
The situation remains heated, pushing authorities to set a December 20 deadline for resolution. While efforts are being made to reach an agreement, worries regarding the power of VDCs, their potential for social boycotts, and their impact on regional community relations have been raised.
The episode in Velpur highlights the difficulties in settling long-standing disagreements surrounding holy sites, as well as the importance of fostering community harmony in varied communities. Authorities continue to closely watch the situation, underlining the importance of a peaceful resolution in order to maintain social cohesion in the region.
