Controversy Erupts Over Simultaneous Elections in Telangana

Hyderabad: The opposition alliance INDIA in Telangana has stated its objection to the central government’s demand for simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. However, the state’s ruling BRS party has yet to clarify its position on the issue.

In the middle of this controversy, State Congress President Revanth Reddy made public a letter issued to the Law Commission by Chief Minister KCR on July 6, 2018. KCR stated his support for simultaneous elections to the parliament and state assemblies in this letter.

KCR wrote this letter to Dr. Justice B.S. Chauhan, the then-chairman of the Law Commission of India, as president of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and chief minister at the time, in response to a letter from the Law Commission dated June 14, 2018, seeking comments on uniform elections.

KCR emphasized the difficulties of holding separate elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies in the letter. He stated that these elections generate enormous disruptions, consume significant resources, and impede the execution of development and social programs. Furthermore, they force political parties and candidates to spend significant sums twice every five years.

KCR emphasized the importance of holding simultaneous elections for the Assembly and Lok Sabha in order to cut costs and streamline the electoral process. He showed strong support for the proposal, noting that the TRS supports simultaneous elections.

In a letter to the chief minister, Revanth Reddy has asked for an explanation of KCR’s present attitude on simultaneous elections.
