A city court has rejected a plea of Hasin Jajan, the estranged wife of Indian pacer Mohammed Shami, that her husband be asked to pay a monthly maintenance fee of Rs ten lakh for her and their three-year-old daughter.
Judicial magistrate Neha Sharma in Alipore district court on Thursday only admitted the prayer for maintenance of their child and directed Shami to Rs 80,000 a month.
Four months ago, she had lodged a complaint of torture against Shami and her in-laws in the city police headquarters Lalbazar and moved the court seeking maintenance fee for her and their daughter.
“The court has allowed an interim relief of Rs 80,000 for Hasin Jahan’s daughter , but turned down her maintenance of Rs ten lakh on the ground that there is no evidence in support of the statement about Shami’s income,” Haseen’s lawyer Zakir Hossain said.
Hossain pleaded before the court that Shami, a member of the Indian cricket team, who earns nearly Rs 10 crore a year is in a position to pay Rs ten lakh for his wife and their daughter.
Contesting the submission, Shami’s lawyer Sheikh Salim Rahaman told the court Haseen had kept from Shami that she had been married and she had two daughters for the relationship.
“The marriage certificate mentions her as unmarried, which suggests that she had hidden her marital status from Shami,” Rahaman said, “We also have proof that she took to modeling and acting as profession and is financial y self-reliant.”Rahman placed a photocopy of the marriage certificate and some newspaper clippings before the court in support of his arguments.
A professional model and former cheerleader for Kolkata Knight Riders, Hasin, however , resumed her modeling career to make a “dignified” living .
Hasin who continues to live in her Jadavpur flat with her daughter said ” I gave up modeling and my dreams for Shami because he didn’t like my career. But, he had deserted me,”” Now, I am trying to reclaim the fame and position I had once achieved,” she added.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), however, cleared Shami’s central contract after its anti-corruption unit exonerated him of corruption charges leveled by Jahan.
In March, Hasin Jahan had met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in connection with the case.
Mamata had met the cricketer’s wife at the state Assembly for around 15 minutes and heard Jahan’s complaint against Shami.
