Over 500 Candidates with Criminal Records Contest Telangana Elections

As the Telangana Assembly Elections approach, a research produced by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Telangana Election Watch has revealed troubling figures. 521 of the 2,290 candidates running for office had criminal cases filed against them. The majority of such candidates, 85 in total, are members of Congress.

The report investigates the criminal records of candidates from various parties, indicating that 79 of 111 BJP candidates and 57 of 119 BRS candidates have criminal convictions against them. According to the study, 353 candidates had declared significant criminal cases.

In terms of crimes against women, 45 candidates have cases relating to such offenses, with three announcing rape charges. In addition, seven candidates face murder charges, while 27 face attempted murder charges.

According to the study, 96 of 119 constituencies are designated as “red alert constituencies,” where three or more candidates have declared criminal proceedings against themselves. This demonstrates a substantial concern regarding the number of applicants with legal issues in various Telangana regions.

It is worth noting that the ADR report is an important instrument for examining candidates’ criminal records, presenting voters with significant information as they make their political choices. Because of the competitive political scene and the necessity for a transparent and fair democratic process, the next Telangana Assembly Elections, planned for November 30, 2023, have piqued the public’s interest. The incumbent BRS, led by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, seeks a third consecutive term, while the Congress and BJP seek to challenge it.
