Cross-Border Love Triumphs: BJP Leader’s Son Marries Pakistani Bride in Online Nikah

In a rare cross-border union, a unique wedding took place in Uttar Pradesh when the son of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader married a woman from Pakistan via an online “nikah” ceremony, defying the political tensions between the two neighboring nations.

Tahseen Shahid, a BJP corporator, arranged the marriage of his elder son, Mohammad Abbas Haider, to Andleep Zahra, a resident of Lahore, Pakistan. However, securing a visa for Haider proved challenging due to the ongoing strained diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan. Despite attempts to facilitate his travel to Pakistan, the visa process remained unsuccessful.

Adding to the urgency, Zahra’s mother, Rana Yasmin Zaidi, fell critically ill and was admitted to an intensive care unit in Lahore. This complication prompted Shahid to opt for an online “nikah” to ensure the marriage could proceed without further delays.

On the night of the wedding, Shahid hosted a gathering of “baraatis” (wedding guests) at an imambara in Uttar Pradesh, where the online ceremony was performed. Zahra’s family, based in Lahore, participated virtually.

The nikah was officiated by Shia religious leader Maulana Mahfoozul Hasan Khan, who explained that Islamic law requires the consent of the woman for the marriage to be valid. Khan clarified that communication between the bride and groom can be mediated through a religious leader, making an online ceremony permissible under Islamic law.

The wedding was an intimate yet festive affair, attended by family members, friends, and dignitaries, including BJP Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Brijesh Singh Prishu. Guests congratulated the groom’s family on the successful union, which marked a heartwarming moment amid the tense backdrop of India-Pakistan relations.

Haider expressed his joy at the successful completion of the ceremony, stating, “I am hopeful that my wife will soon receive her Indian visa without any issues, and we can begin our life together here.”
