Daily Traffic Jams Choke Hyderabad as Vehicle Count Rises Sharply

Traffic congestion continues to be a major concern for Hyderabad residents, with roads clogged from 6 a.m. until midnight. Police Commissioner C.V. Anand revealed that nearly 91 lakh vehicles ply the roads of Greater Hyderabad every weekday, putting immense pressure on the city’s traffic system.

Despite the staggering vehicle numbers, officials report a slight improvement in traffic speed—from 17–18 km/h last year to 24–25 km/h currently—thanks to initiatives by the Hyderabad Traffic Police, especially the implementation of Operation ROPE (Regulation, Observation, Planning, and Enforcement). Authorities say the project will be expanded further to tackle rising congestion.

However, the city’s roads are struggling to keep up with demand as about 1,600 new vehicles are added every day. Managing VIP movements has improved, especially after the Chief Minister directed that traffic disruptions during VIP convoys be minimized. This directive has helped reduce unnecessary stoppages during peak hours.

At present, 80% of traffic signals across the city function in automatic mode, enabling better flow of vehicles. Traffic police have also shifted their focus to serious violations instead of handing out large volumes of fines. This has led to a drop in the total number of challans issued.

To better manage the chaos, the police have started using drone surveillance and are partnering with Google for real-time traffic data and mapping. Recognizing staff shortages, the department plans to induct Traffic Marshals—trained assistants to support the existing force.

In a unique initiative, transgender persons have been included as traffic assistants, and officials say they are performing admirably.

As the rainy season approaches, the traffic police are teaming up with GHMC and Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) to address flooding and water-logging that further worsen traffic jams.

Meanwhile, private travel buses have also been flagged as a major contributor to road congestion. The police are scheduling a meeting with bus owners and are expected to introduce measures to tackle this issue soon.
