Doctor at Mount Sinai Fired Over Controversial Social Media Posts

A doctor at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York has been dismissed after her controversial social media posts drew widespread criticism. According to a report by the New York Post, Dr. Lila Abassi, who worked as an assistant professor of medicine at the hospital’s Upper East Side campus, was terminated following an internal investigation into her online activity.

Dr. Abassi reportedly made multiple posts in support of Hamas and Hezbollah, referring to them as “noble resistance and freedom fighters.” She also described the Israeli army as a “plague” and accused Israel of “slaughtering babies.” Additionally, she questioned reports of sexual violence during the October 7, 2023, attack in Israel, in which 1,200 Israelis were killed and thousands were injured.

One of her posts in a Facebook doctors’ group, where she used the pseudonym “Kluver Bucy,” stated, “Please show me actual rape video,” in response to reports of sexual violence during the attack. The name “Kluver Bucy” references a rare neurological disorder affecting memory and behavior.

The controversy intensified after New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov (R-Brooklyn) urged Mount Sinai to take action against Dr. Abassi. Vernikov stated that simply deleting her social media account would not erase her documented support for terrorism or ease concerns among Jewish patients about their safety under her care.

Following an internal review, Mount Sinai Hospital confirmed Dr. Abassi’s dismissal. A hospital spokeswoman stated that her statements were unacceptable and did not align with the institution’s values.
