Drinking Water Crisis Worsens in Adilabad as Summer Heat Intensifies

The drinking water crisis in Adilabad district is rapidly worsening as the summer heat intensifies, leading to severe shortages in several mandals. With rising temperatures, groundwater levels are depleting at an alarming rate, leaving many residents struggling for access to clean water.

Areas such as Ichchoda, Gadiguda, Bazar Hatnur, and Gudihatnur mandals have seen the groundwater table drop by at least 18 meters. The crisis is particularly severe in remote tribal hamlets, where water supply under the Mission Bhagiratha scheme is available only twice a week. Additionally, many hand pumps in villages are in dire need of repairs, further aggravating the situation.

Residents in tribal thandas, hamlets, and gudems are the worst affected, as open wells are drying up rapidly. Delays in repairing Mission Bhagiratha motors have forced villagers to rely heavily on hand pumps. In some cases, people have been left with no choice but to use water from agricultural bore wells for drinking.

The crisis has spread across several mandals, including Adilabad, Indravelli, Utnoor, Bazar Hatnur, Boath, Bela, and Neradigonda. As per the district’s summer action plan, at least 88 habitats are currently facing critical water shortages. A report has been submitted to the state government requesting ₹3 crore for repairing bore wells, hand pumps, and undertaking other necessary measures to mitigate the crisis.

Chandramohan, Executive Engineer of the Rural Water Supply Department, has assured that water will be supplied via tankers wherever necessary. However, local residents fear that the situation will deteriorate further in April and May if immediate action is not taken.

Pendur Radhabai, a resident of Tekidiguda in Indravelli, expressed her concern, stating that their village has only one functional hand pump. With irregular supply from Mission Bhagiratha, residents are entirely dependent on this single source for their daily water needs. She urged the authorities to repair the existing infrastructure or provide one hand pump per household to ease the crisis.

As temperatures continue to rise, urgent intervention is needed to ensure that residents across Adilabad district have access to safe drinking water.
