Ibrahim Al Jarwan, a leading Emirati astronomer and Chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society, has shared his forecast for the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah. According to Al Jarwan, the first day of Dhul Hijjah is likely to begin on Wednesday, May 28, with Eid Al Adha falling on the 10th day of the month, which would be June 6 this year.
The Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle, so the exact date of Eid is determined by moon sightings, often varying from country to country. Al Jarwan noted that the new moon of Dhul Hijjah will be born on Tuesday, May 27 at 7:02 AM (UAE time). By sunset, the moon will be visible above the horizon for approximately 38 minutes, making the crescent sighting possible in the region.
In a statement to Emarat Al Youm, Al Jarwan emphasized that while astronomical calculations are helpful in anticipating dates, the final confirmation of Eid Al Adha will be made by official Islamic authorities, based on actual moon sightings in accordance with Shariah law.
Eid Al Adha commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God, before God provided a ram as a substitute. It also marks the culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.
