Electricity Workers Protest Adani’s Entry into Hyderabad Power Sector

The Telangana State United Electricity Employees Union is gearing up for a significant statewide protest against the state government’s reported plans to hand over power bill collection in Hyderabad’s Old City to the Adani Group. The union strongly opposes the privatization of power services, arguing that it will negatively impact power utilities, consumers, and employees.

K. Eshwar Rao, president of the Electricity Employees Union, revealed during a meeting with power staff that the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TGSPDCL) management is considering transferring revenue collection and meter reading functions in the South Circle to a private company. He called on union members to prepare for a massive agitation to resist this move.

Rao criticized the government’s justification for privatization, which is based on addressing transmission losses. He argued that involving the Adani Group in the electricity supply would prioritize profit over public interest, potentially increasing costs for consumers and compromising service quality. “Privatization has failed across the country. Implementing the same in Hyderabad is not in the interest of consumers and power employees,” Rao stated.

The union president highlighted the significant transmission losses in Hyderabad’s Old City, with the South Circle experiencing losses of 40 to 42 percent, primarily due to theft. This contrasts with the normal transmission losses of around 10 percent in the rest of the city. Rao emphasized that the proposed privatization could exacerbate these issues rather than resolve them.

DISCOM officials confirmed the high loss figures, underscoring the challenge of managing transmission effectively in the Old City. The union’s opposition is rooted in the belief that the Adani Group’s entry into the power sector would be detrimental to the community.

As tensions rise, the Telangana State United Electricity Employees Union is mobilizing its members for a large-scale protest, determined to oppose the privatization of power services and protect the interests of consumers and employees. The union’s actions signal a significant resistance to the government’s plans and highlight the broader concerns surrounding privatization in the public sector.
