‘England tour an opportunity for Siraj to become frontline bowler alongside Bumrah’, opines Bharat Arun

As India gears up for a highly anticipated five-match Test series against England starting June 20 in Leeds, much of the buzz surrounds the Indian bowling line-up featuring Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja. Former India bowling coach Bharat Arun believes this series will be defined by the bowlers, and it’s the perfect time for Siraj to step into a more prominent role.

In a conversation with media, facilitated by Sony Sports Network, Arun emphasized Siraj’s growth and potential to lead India’s pace attack alongside Bumrah. “Siraj has been in great rhythm, especially in the IPL. He’s matured, learned from his mistakes, and is ready to take on greater responsibility,” said Arun.

Arun reflected on India’s strong showing during the 2021 England tour when the team led the series before it was halted. He credited the bowlers’ prior experience and ability to quickly adjust to English conditions as key factors in their success.

He also highlighted the importance of the 2018 England tour—even though India didn’t win, the close contests provided valuable experience. “Those games gave the team confidence and learning, which helped us succeed later, including the historic win in Australia,” Arun said.

Speaking about India’s options for the third pace bowler, Arun backed Arshdeep Singh over Prasidh Krishna. “Arshdeep has an advantage because he’s a left-arm bowler who can swing the ball both ways. His county experience with Kent will be crucial in understanding English conditions,” he explained.

However, he also acknowledged Prasidh Krishna’s raw pace and good IPL performances. The key for both, Arun said, would be how quickly they can adapt to the challenges presented by English pitches and weather.

Arun underlined how the Dukes ball, known for its movement and seam, offers an advantage to bowlers. But he cautioned that it demands skill and adaptability.

“In England, weather and pitch conditions can change not just venue to venue, but day to day. Bowlers must understand what lengths to bowl depending on whether the ball is moving or not. That’s the biggest test,” he said.

He concluded that India’s bowling unit has the tools, talent, and experience to succeed in England, provided they adapt quickly to varying conditions.
