Fate of few Telangana Cabinet Ministers Hangs in Balance

In the run-up to the 2023 Assembly elections, the fate of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s Cabinet Ministers hangs in the balance. The current Cabinet comprises 18 members, with three being Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) and the remaining 15 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). Notably, only Information Minister Patnam Mahendar Reddy, Home Minister Mohammad Mahmood Ali, and Tribal and Women Welfare Minister Satyavathi Rathod have opted not to contest in the upcoming elections.

Reflecting on the 2018 Assembly elections, only four ministers faced defeat, namely Tummala Nageswar Rao, P Mahendar Reddy, Ajmeera Chandulal, and Jupally Krishna Rao. Of these, Tummala Nageswar Rao and Jupally Krishna Rao are now contesting on a Congress ticket, while Ajmeera Chandulal passed away in April 2021. P Mahendar Reddy, who joined the Cabinet just before the 2023 elections, has chosen not to participate in the current electoral battle.

Among the 15 ministers vying for seats in the 2023 elections, political circles are abuzz with discussions about who is in a safe position and who might be in the danger zone. Sources suggest that at least six ministers are facing stiff competition from the Congress and the BJP.

Compared to the 2018 elections, the number of ministers expected to face defeat appears to be on the rise. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and Finance Minister T Harish Rao are considered to be in safe positions, with Ministers KT Rama Rao, Errabelli Dayakar Rao, Talasani Srinivasa Yadav, and others also perceived to be in relatively secure positions. However, the volatile nature of politics means that the fate of these ministers could change at the last minute.

Political observers indicate that Ministers Sabitha Indra Reddy, Gangula Kamalakar, A Indrakaran Reddy, and a few others are in the danger zone. Nonetheless, there is confidence within certain circles that, barring one or two exceptions, most ministers will emerge victorious in the current elections. They argue that the enduring popularity of CM KCR and his accomplishments over the past decade will play a pivotal role in securing the victory of the ruling party, emphasizing that the electoral success of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) hinges on the image of CM KCR and the developmental strides made during his tenure.
