A portion of the pedestrian staircase attached to the Fatehnagar flyover bridge in Sanathnagar collapsed on Tuesday, leaving two people injured. The injured pedestrians were rushed to a nearby hospital with superficial injuries and are currently under treatment.
According to initial reports, the staircase — part of the decades-old infrastructure of the Fatehnagar flyover — was already in a weakened condition. Witnesses stated that the structure gave way while pedestrians were using it. The incident occurred suddenly, causing panic among locals.
The collapsed staircase, estimated to be over 30 years old, was reportedly damaged prior to the incident. Locals had allegedly raised concerns earlier about the deteriorating condition of the structure, but no major repairs were undertaken.

Upon receiving information, Sanathnagar police rushed to the spot to assess the situation. Preliminary investigation suggests that recent rainfall may have contributed to the structural failure. Authorities suspect that water seepage weakened the already compromised staircase, leading to the collapse.
No fatalities were reported, but the incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for inspection and maintenance of ageing public infrastructure in the city.
Municipal officials are expected to conduct a detailed inspection of similar structures in the area to prevent further mishaps. The local community has demanded immediate repair and safety measures for all public access points along the flyover.
