Following no inflows, most of the gates at Osman and Himayath Sagar closed

Witnessing no fresh rains and inflows into reservoirs, the authorities at Himayath Sagar and Osman Sagar have gradually closed most of the opened crest gates that were lifted one after another since September 28 following heavy rains coupled with huge inrush in both the Lakes.

The authorities at Himayath Sagar have so far lifted 10 out of 17 gates to release flood water into Musi River since September 28. However, till September 1, almost eight opened gates were shut down leaving behind only 2 gates remain open upto one foot to release 700 cusecs of water into Musi River as against 800 cusecs of inflows into the Lake.

The water level in the lake too was rescinded to its earlier position with present capacity standing at 1763.45 feet (2.949 TMC) as against the full tank level of 1763.50 feet (2.97 TMC).

Similarly, the authorities at Osman Sagar closed four open crest gates leaving behind only two gates remained opened upto three feet height. While the lake is receiving 800 cusecs of inflows from catchment areas the two gates were kept open to flush out 700 cusecs of water into Musi.

Earlier, out of total 15 gates the authorities here have raised 6 crest gates to release the pressure of inflows into Musi River. Osman Sagar Lake, for the first time in the past 20 years saw such a high volume of inflows that prompted the officials to lift almost 6 gates one after another geven the swelling inrush. However, as the intensity of inflows subsided and no rains were reported at catchment areas since the last two days, the authorities have now closed down four out of 6 gates that were open since September 28 with only 2 gates left remain opened upto three feet height.

The reservoir has completely crammed as the storage capacity of Osman Sagar too has reached to crescendo due to incessant rains coupled with huge inflows from catchment areas. The present storage level of the lake stood at 1790 feet (3.900 TMC) as against the full tank capacity of 17900 feet (3.900 TMC).

Upbeat over the good rains and bountiful inflows into both reservoirs this season, the authorities felt that the rains and the inflows from catchment areas, although has subsided but we are still cautious about fresh rains as the rainy season was not yet completed signoff.
