In response to a recent wave of food poisoning cases linked to momo vendors in Hyderabad, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) have launched an intensive inspection drive across the city. The campaign, aimed at ensuring public health and food safety, has targeted eateries selling momos, particularly in the Banjara Hills area, after several people fell ill from eating contaminated momos.
The incident began with multiple cases of food poisoning reported from an establishment in Nandi Nagar, Banjara Hills. GHMC’s Food Safety Wing quickly identified the vendor in question, which was operating under the names WOW Hot Momos and Delhi Hot Momos. Following reports from affected individuals, GHMC officials promptly visited Swathi Hospital and Tanvir Hospital, where they confirmed that 13 patients were admitted with food poisoning symptoms attributed to this vendor. Authorities also met with the patients and their attending doctors to gather information on the severity and nature of the cases.
In an effort to prevent further incidents, the GHMC launched a city-wide inspection on Tuesday, covering 110 momo vendors across Hyderabad. Food inspectors collected 69 samples, which were immediately sent for testing to ensure compliance with food safety standards. The samples are being analyzed to detect any harmful contaminants that could have led to the outbreak of illness.

Alongside sample collection, GHMC officials have taken proactive steps to educate food handlers on the importance of proper hygiene and sanitation. During the inspections, momo vendors were instructed on best practices in food handling, including measures to avoid contamination.
A spokesperson from GHMC stated, “The health and safety of Hyderabad’s residents is our top priority. Our food safety team will continue to monitor vendors closely and take strict action against any establishment found violating food safety regulations. We are committed to preventing such incidents in the future.”
The FSSAI has voiced its support for GHMC’s efforts, reiterating the importance of upholding food safety standards to protect public health. Hyderabad residents are also being urged to remain vigilant and report any incidents of suspected food contamination to local authorities.
The GHMC’s swift response to the incident has been met with appreciation from the public. As the city awaits test results from the collected samples, the inspection drive is expected to deter non-compliant vendors and raise awareness of essential food safety practices.
