Former Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) president Mohammed Azharuddin is facing contempt of court charges for refusing to allow the Nalgonda District Cricket Association (NDCA) to play in HCA tournaments. The NDCA had filed a contempt complaint, alleging that Azharuddin had ignored a court order granted in 2022.
In response to the contempt petition, Azharuddin filed an affidavit with the Telangana High Court outlining his position on the case. Zeeshan Adnan Mahmood, lawyer for NDCA, criticised Azharuddin’s affidavit, pointing out various discrepancies and inaccurate assertions.
Given the arguments advanced, Justice T Vinod Kumar of the Telangana High Court dismissed Azharuddin’s affidavit as insufficient. Azharuddin has been summoned to appear in court within two weeks and present a more detailed and compelling affidavit.
This development underscores the legal struggle between the HCA and the NDCA over the latter’s involvement in matches organised by the former. The court’s decision to reject Azharuddin’s answer and require a better affidavit demonstrates how seriously the court takes the claims of contempt of court. The matter will be heard again because Azharuddin is likely to produce a more suitable affidavit within the deadline specified.
