Four Arrested, Including Two Policemen, for Smuggling Duty-Free Liquor from Hyderabad Airport

The Prohibition and Excise (P&E) District Task Force has busted a liquor smuggling syndicate operating out of Rajiv Gandhi International (RGI) Airport, Shamshabad, and arrested four individuals, including two policemen, for their alleged involvement.

The arrested individuals have been identified as constable M. Gemya Naik (37), home guard Bhandari Lingaiah (36), hotel manager P. Raghavendra Rao (36), and G. Harish Kumar (36). According to officials, the group had formed a syndicate to illegally smuggle duty-free liquor from the airport’s stalls and sell it in the city market.

“Gemya Naik, with the assistance of his associates, purchased liquor from the duty-free shop at the airport. They smuggled it out during busy hours or under the cover of VIP visits. The gang then supplied it to regular customers across the city,” a P&E official stated.

The operation came to light after a tip-off led P&E teams to monitor the suspects’ activities. Upon confirmation, the team conducted a raid, apprehending the four individuals and seizing liquor worth ₹15 lakh.

However, one associate of the group, identified as Maheshwar, remains absconding. Authorities have launched efforts to apprehend him. The arrested individuals have been produced before the court, and investigations are underway to ascertain the extent of the smuggling network.

This incident highlights the need for stricter monitoring of duty-free liquor sales and vigilance at key transit points like the RGI Airport.
