During Ganesh Visarjan (Immersion), the Hyderabad metro rail witnessed a heavy inflow of passengers. Metro officials reported that 4 lakh passengers used the metro on September 9.
There were a large number of travellers at Khairatabad metro station. During the immersion ceremony in Khairatabad, where the city’s biggest Ganesh idol is installed every year, great crowds of people participate in the procession.
Khairatabad metro officials reported that around 40,000 passengers exited the station, while 22,500 entered.
As a result of the expected large crowds for Ganesh immersion, the Hyderabad metro rail had previously announced it would remain open longer than usual. By 2:00 am, the last trains had reached their destinations.
Devotees brave rain
Rain delays halted the Ganesh immersion procession in the old city by a few hours.
At 11.30 am, the Balapur Ganesh idol began its journey after the laddu auction, which fetched a record 24.6 lakh rupees. More idols lined up the road between Chandrayangutta and Charminar as Hussain Sagar approached.
Rains began around noon and continued for around two hours, halting the procession. While other idols were stuck at starting points, the organizers of the Balapur Ganesh parade braved the rain.
The idols started for Hussain Sagar after the rains subsided. Several idols began their journey at 5 pm from Chandrayangutta, Falaknuma, Uppuguda, Chatrinaka, and other areas usually seen as the tail-end of the Ganesh idol procession. A heavy police presence was present as the idols passed the Charminar at 10 pm.
In the afternoon, tensions prevailed at Shahalibanda’s crossroads when BJP leader A Jitender argued with the police for stopping the procession. Police explained that the move was initiated during Friday prayers at Mecca Masjid. Jitender and his supporters were later pacified by the police.
