GHMC Cracks Down on Bakeries Over Poor Hygiene and Safety Violations

In a major city-wide initiative to uphold food safety standards, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has conducted surprise inspections at 90 bakeries across different zones. The drive was spearheaded by the GHMC Food Safety Wing under the directions of the GHMC Commissioner, focusing on hygiene compliance and consumer safety.

During the inspection, officials collected 80 food samples which have now been sent to the State Food Laboratory in Nacharam for quality analysis. The checks aimed to ensure that bakeries are adhering to the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and its associated Rules and Regulations, 2011.

The Food Safety Officers issued advisories to bakery owners regarding:

  • Maintaining cleanliness in food preparation and storage areas
  • Ensuring hygienic display counters
  • Implementing proper labeling on food items, including manufacturing and expiry dates

Multiple violations were recorded, with notices issued for non-compliance. In more serious cases, the matter may be forwarded for legal adjudication by designated officers.
