GHMC Imposes ₹30 Lakh in Fines, Shuts Down 12 Hostel Kitchens in Crackdown on Food Adulteration

In a major drive to combat food adulteration and promote public health, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has intensified inspections across the city through its Food Safety Wing.

According to an official statement issued on Sunday, authorities collected 1,887 food samples during 2024, of which 95 were found in violation of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. In response, GHMC levied fines totaling ₹30.60 lakh against food business operators found guilty of non-compliance.

Out of these, 12 samples were declared unsafe for human consumption, prompting the initiation of criminal prosecution against the violators. In addition to enforcement, the GHMC also emphasized public education.

Through its ‘Food Safety on Wheels’ mobile unit, the Food Safety Wing conducted 210 training and awareness camps during the financial year 2024-25. These camps resulted in 4,006 on-the-spot quality and hygiene tests targeting street food vendors, who were also trained in safe food handling and hygiene practices.

Efforts were also made to formalize street food businesses, with GHMC issuing 1,500 registration certificates to vendors and hawkers. A special inspection campaign focused on hostels in areas including LB Nagar, Kukatpally, Serilingampally, Ashok Nagar, Dilsukhnagar, and Ameerpet. Officials inspected 117 hostels and issued notices to 74 managements for unhygienic conditions. As a result, kitchens in 12 hostels were shut down and fines totaling ₹5.09 lakh were imposed on 70 establishments under the GHMC Act, 1955.

The GHMC reiterated its commitment to food safety and warned that stricter action would follow against violators who put public health at risk.
