The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched a new initiative to collect detailed information about buildings for a survey under the Comprehensive Integrated Geographic Information System (GIS).
This survey will assign unique identity numbers, known as Digital Addresses, to buildings. GHMC Commissioner Amrapali Kata clarified that this project is not linked to property tax adjustments.
Originally planned to take 18 months, the project has now been expedited to be completed within six months. During a press meeting, Commissioner Amrapali explained that the GHMC’s drone survey, covering 130 square kilometers, has already mapped 650 square kilometers of Hyderabad across eight circles, with the project costing Rs 22 crore.

Addressing concerns about potential changes in property tax, officials reassured the public that the survey would not directly affect property taxes. The GIS survey aims to provide accurate mapping, which could simplify the process for property owners who may need to correct their tax assessments in the future.
The GIS-based Digital Address will replace the current house numbering system, which Commissioner Amrapali described as “unscientific.” The new system will provide a more accurate and scientific identification method. Data security is also a priority, with all collected information stored securely in the RailTel server, managed by the Government of India’s Ministry of Railways. Access to this data will be restricted to GHMC officials and building owners.
The project consists of three phases: initial mapping, a drone survey to capture images, and a ground survey where staff collect essential building details. The Commissioner emphasized that no personal information, such as PAN or Aadhaar details, is being collected—only mandatory building information and resources like accelerators and garbage pickers.
