Govt Hospital Contract Workers Protest Over 5-Month Unpaid Wages

Contract workers, demanding payment of pending wages for the past five months, staged a protest in front of the Area Hospital in Bhadradri Kothagudem district under the leadership of the CITU town committee.

CITU district president K. Brahmachary alleged that the new contractor has been causing problems for the contract workers, questioning how they can perform their duties without payment of wages. In February, the ITDA project officer had asked hospital superintendent Dr. Ramakrishna to assure the workers of wage payment, but this promise has not yet been fulfilled.

Following directions from the hospital superintendent, RMO Rajasekhar Reddy held discussions with the contract workers. The workers called off their agitation after Reddy assured them that their salaries, including five months of arrears, would be deposited into their bank accounts by June 9 after he consulted with higher authorities. If the salaries are not credited by June 9, the contract workers will go on strike from June 10 and have handed over an indefinite strike notice to the RMO.
