Gulzar Houz Fountain Reopens in Hyderabad

In an attempt to conserve Hyderabad’s rich cultural history, the ancient Gulzar Houz fountain, which dates back to the 16th century, was reopened on Friday, October 6, after substantial repair and reconstruction work. Several dignitaries, including AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi, attended the opening event.

The rehabilitation project, which has a budget of Rs 29.50 lakh, will begin in February 2023. The goal was to not only restore the fountain to its former grandeur, but also to preserve its historical relevance for future generations.

Gulzar Houz, originally known as ‘Char Su Ka Houz’ (four-sided fountain), was created a few years after the famed Charminar, which was established in 1591 by Quli Qutb Shah and is considered one of Hyderabad’s foundational landmarks. Over the years, the Gulzar Houz fountain provided as a key supply of drinking water for the local community.

Gulzar Houz’s architectural progression is significant. It began with twelve sides and ultimately evolved into an octagonal shape, seeming almost round.

Asaduddin Owaisi, President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), lay the foundation stones for three further projects targeted at improving the city’s infrastructure and historical monuments at the inaugural event. These projects include the development of a multi-level parking area at Old Bus Stand Charminar (costing Rs 34.60 crores), beautification work for shop elevations at Laad Bazar in Charminar (costing Rs 36 crore), and the development of two pedestrian bridges on the Musi River at Nayapul (costing Rs 40 crore each).

The reopening of the renovated Gulzar Houz fountain, as well as the start of these initiatives, reflect the city’s dedication to maintaining its cultural legacy and improving its infrastructure for inhabitants and visitors alike.
