BRS leader and former Minister T. Harish Rao has sharply criticized the State government for its failure to address the escalating stray dog menace. Speaking on Saturday, Rao highlighted a troubling surge in stray dog attacks, emphasizing the government’s inaction despite several horrific incidents.
Recent attacks have underscored the severity of the problem. In a particularly gruesome event, stray dogs were reported to have attacked and eaten a newborn baby on the premises of Warangal MGM Hospital. In another alarming case, a disabled child was mauled by stray dogs in Narsingi municipality on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Additionally, a four-year-old girl succumbed to injuries inflicted by stray dogs in Ibrahimpatnam, Rangareddy district.
Rao condemned the government’s lack of urgency and said that the frequent occurrence of such tragic incidents had become a disturbing norm. He criticized the government’s response, arguing that if it had taken the issue seriously, the 343 cases of severe dog attacks and multiple fatalities reported over the past eight months could have been avoided.

The government’s recent submission to the High Court revealed that there are 379,156 stray dogs in the State. However, many believe that the actual number could be double that figure. Stray dogs are reportedly out of control in most urban areas, further aggravating the situation.
Rao called for the implementation of a comprehensive action plan to effectively manage the stray dog issue. He also urged the government to ensure that anti-rabies vaccines are made available at all primary health centers and public hospitals to protect victims from potential infections.
As the stray dog menace continues to escalate, Rao’s comments reflect growing public frustration and highlight the urgent need for a coordinated and effective response to safeguard public safety
