As the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall across Telangana for the coming week, along with a heavy rainfall alert for the next two days, the State’s Department of Public Health and Family Welfare has issued a health advisory for citizens to stay alert against seasonal diseases.
Dr B. Ravinder Nayak, Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, cautioned that the drop in temperature combined with increased humidity during the monsoon season may cause a rise in vector-borne, water-borne, and airborne diseases. Citizens are being advised to take necessary precautions to safeguard themselves from illnesses such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, jaundice, typhoid, viral fevers, influenza, and gastroenteritis.
To prevent mosquito-borne diseases, people are urged to ensure that doors and windows are secured with mosquito nets or screens. They should use mosquito repellents and sleep under mosquito nets, including those placed over cribs for infants. It is important to prevent water stagnation in and around houses by maintaining household drains, covering septic tanks with mosquito-proof mesh, and removing any containers that collect water. As a preventive measure, residents are advised to observe a ‘Dry Day’ every Friday to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.

To reduce the risk of water-borne illnesses like jaundice, typhoid, and acute gastroenteritis, individuals must drink only boiled or filtered water. Regular hand washing is essential, especially before eating or cooking. People should also avoid eating stale food or consuming food from street vendors during the monsoon.
To guard against airborne infections such as viral fevers and influenza, citizens are encouraged to avoid handshakes, especially if they or the other person are unwell. Frequent use of hand sanitizers and covering the mouth and nose with a handkerchief while coughing or sneezing is recommended. If symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat, or body ache develop, the advisory recommends visiting nearby government health facilities for timely medical assistance.
The health department emphasised that these precautions are crucial to prevent the spread of diseases during the monsoon, as Telangana prepares to experience significant rainfall in the coming days.
