The festival of Makar Sankranti is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, in a uniquely traditional style. The real charm of the festival lies in the iconic “Khambha Houses” of the city, where kite-flying takes center stage on their spacious terraces. Many people even rent these terraces, spending lakhs of rupees to enjoy the festivities.
For those unfamiliar with Khambha Houses, these historic structures were built between 1738 and 1753 during the Mughal and Maratha eras for safety purposes. Featuring large courtyards and intricately carved wooden doors, these houses were designed for durability. The narrow lanes leading to these houses add to their old-world charm.
This year, over 80% of the terraces in the Khambha House area, located in the Kot region of Ahmedabad, have already been booked. Compared to last year, prices have significantly increased. Large terraces are being rented for kite-flying at rates ranging from ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 for Makar Sankranti celebrations.
