Hundreds of Retired Employees Continue in Telangana Government Service

In a significant development following the Congress party’s assumption of power, attention has turned sharply to the issue of retired employees continuing in government service on extension, re-appointment, contract, and outsourcing terms. A recent report released by the government reveals that despite initial efforts, a staggering 80% of retired personnel remain actively employed.

According to government sources, as of January 2024, approximately 1,050 retired employees were still engaged in various departments across the state. Shockingly, only a modest 10% to 15% of these individuals have been successfully removed from their posts despite the government’s intent to streamline administrative roles.

The impending decision-making process has intensified following recent transfers of high-ranking IAS and IPS officials, with indications pointing towards the termination of services for many of these retired employees. The move aims to restore efficiency and promote a rejuvenated workforce within governmental structures.

The report highlights that the Municipal Department hosts the highest number of retained retirees, with 180 individuals surpassing the retirement age but still actively contributing. Following closely, the Higher Education Department accounts for 88 such cases, while the Roads and Buildings Department and Civil Supplies Department have 81 and 75 retirees respectively still in service. The Irrigation Department also employs 70 retirees, contributing to an estimated annual expenditure of Rs 1,800 crore as of the latest data.

This development underscores the government’s commitment to optimizing resources and ensuring equitable employment opportunities within the public sector. As deliberations continue, stakeholders eagerly await further directives from the administration regarding the future of these longstanding personnel in government service.
