As part of its continuing efforts to make quality healthcare services accessible to the urban poor, the State health department expects to open 41 more Basthi Dawakhanas in Hyderabad this December.
As part of the state’s overall plan to open at least 288 Basthi Dawakhanas in 141 municipalities across Telangana within the next few years, 41 more Basthi Dawakhanas will be added to Hyderabad, bringing the total number to nearly 300.
Based on low-cost urban health clinics, Basthi Dawakhanas provides free healthcare and diagnostic services to the urban poor, including daily wagers, migrant workers, and their families.
As a result of the strong response to Basthi Dawakhanas in Hyderabad, the health department is continuing to add more not only in Hyderabad but also in districts, albeit in Palle Dawakhana form.
Health Minister T Harish Rao recently announced that the department will be able to add 41 more Basthi Dawakhans by December 31 in areas under GHMC. The Minister also mentioned that 13 more T-Diagnostic central hubs in Telangana will be ready in the next few months to support Basthi and Palle Dawakhanas.

The Basthi Dawakhanas are typically located near slum settlements, which reduces the travel time for the local population, one of the reasons they are so popular in Hyderabad. Each facility serves at least 5,000 to 10,000 people and offers free doctor consultations, diagnostic tests, and medicines.
Almost all of Telangana’s Basthi Dawakhanas are linked in a hub-and-spoke manner to T-Diagnostics central laboratory hubs, which receive patient blood samples for testing.
The central T-Diagnostic hub in Hyderabad is housed at the Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM), Narayanguda, which recently received NABL accreditation.
To improve diagnostics in government hospitals, the State government is establishing 13 more T-Diagnostic Central labs in Telangana.
There are already 20 such T-Diagnostic central hubs, which have served 36 lakh patients and performed 6.5 crore tests between 2017 and October 2022.
