Families of 11 migrant fire victims devastated
A final glimpse of the 11 migrant workers who died in last month’s fire accident was eagerly awaited at Gandhi Hospital by their friends and distant relatives. Nearly 100 people had gathered there to identify their loved ones who were charred beyond recognition. Each person had to be taken to the mortuary for identification, which was a tedious task for the police.

Sikandar’s friend, Gopal Yadav, a native of Bihar who lives in Jeedimetla, burst into tears while speaking with this correspondent. During the lockdown, Sikandar and I went back to our hometown after things began to normalize. Sikandar got a labourer’s job at the scrap godown, and I got a labourer’s job at Jeedimetla. We would occasionally talk over the phone, but I never thought I would see this day when Sikandar would be charred so badly.”
“Sikandar had a family of three–two daughters and a boy. His entire family relied on his earnings. Now the whole family is devastated to hear of the tragedy. Though the police and the government have offered help to the victims’ families, a life lost is lost,” said Gopal. Rajkumar, another labourer at a construction site in Kondapur, was devastated when he heard that Deepak had passed away.
He learned of the incident through their WhatsApp group. Deepak’s body was identified by the police after he was rushed to the hospital. The fact that Deepak had to deal with such a tragedy is truly tragic. As uneducated people, we can only survive in this world through doing labour work.
