Hyderabad appears to be already experiencing the heat of summer, with temperatures reaching 35.6 degrees Celsius in some areas, which is considered above normal for the transition period from winter to the pre-summer season.
On Monday, the highest daytime temperature of 35.9 degrees Celsius was recorded at Chandanagar, followed by 35.6 degrees Celsius at Karwan and 35.4 degrees Celsius at Moosapet.
The highest temperature of 35 degrees Celsius was recorded on February 23, 2022, according to IMD data, but the month began this year with daytime temperatures consistently crossing 33 degrees Celsius. The highest-ever temperature recorded in the city in February was 38.7 degrees Celsius in 2016.
The Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS), however, has predicted a slight dip in day and night temperatures, which could provide some relief.
A yellow alert has been issued in most areas, including Secunderabad, Alwal, Begumpet, Malkajgiri, Kapra, Saroornagar, Khairatabad and Malakpet, as the minimum temperature could settle below 15 degrees Celsius till Thursday.
Meanwhile, an orange alert has been issued for Kumaram Bheem Asifabad and Sangareddy as the districts are expected to record single-digit temperatures.
Hotter summer expected in Hyderabad this year
Day temperatures in the state capital are expected to reach 32 degrees Celsius next week, indicating an early start to the summer season, and weather experts analysing climatic trends predict punishingly high temperatures.
The El Nino climate pattern, which is associated with extreme heat waves and weak monsoons, is expected to emerge around this summer season, according to the most recent global meteorological models.
“From February 11, day temperatures will gradually begin rising in the city, thus marking the beginning of summer season. However, nights and early mornings will remain cool until February last week,” says Tarani Balaji, known as Telangana Weatherman on Twitter.
